Batmanime

So, my favorite DC Comics superhero is getting his own anime movie.  This Batman film will be a straight to DVD release and will be distributed about two – four weeks before The Dark Knight is shown in theaters.  The motion picture will take place chronologically in between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and we probably be used as a catalyst to link the two together.  Comic book writer, Brian Azzarello will be accompanied by Josh Olsen and David Goyer, among others to screen write the six short stories that the film will be composed of.  Azzarello has worked on other DC works including a few Batman comics and Superman comics.  Josh Olsen wrote the screenplay for A History of Violence while Goyer was the screen writer for the Blade Trinity and Batman Begins.  I am excited about this and think it will turn out great.

Fooly my Cooly

Fooly Cooly, also commonly written as either Furi Kuri or FLCL is a six episode series made by Production I.G. and Gainex.  It’s really short so if you have an afternoon to waste you could either watch Lord of the Rings for the seventh time or get a whole new anime under your belt.  To put it simply, this series is personified chaos, it doesn’t really make much sense the first time you watch it because it’s full of WTF moments that will keep yours jaw dropped and your eyes wide.  Most of the soundtrack is by a J-Rock band named The Pillows, they weren’t really popular before the airing of the series but after its release they have arrived in the mainstream (even filling a huge theater at Anime Boston 2008).  The art style is as crazy as the plot, it can range from regular anime styling to CG, a few parts are done in manga panels, (which was really cool) it even goes as far as to do about half an episode in a South Park style animation.

The story takes place in a suburban town just like any other; it’s a normal town where “nothing amazing ever happens”.  One of the main characters is a boy named Naota Nandaba; he aims to be mature, acting unlike most of the other characters.  He was just sitting on a bridge minding his own business when a pink haired woman comes down the street riding on a yellow Vespa and smacks him in the face with a bass guitar.  This isn’t a normal bass though; it is a left-handed, blue Rickenbacker and has a pull-chord on the back which has it make a sound like a chainsaw.  This strange woman is Haruko Haruhara, a woman working for some kind of galactic space police organization.  After being hit with the guitar, Naota gets a large bump on his forehead where he was hit, later on in the episode back on the bridge, a giant robot arm comes out from the bump and is followed by another robot that has what looks like a television for a head, the two start fighting and the T.V. head wins.  It turns out that after Haruko hit Naota on the head, it created an inter-dimensional portal in which different things can come through.  Another main character is a high school girl named Mamimi Samejima, she used to be Naota’s brother’s girlfriend before he moved to America where he became a baseball player (baseball plays a role later in the series).  Mamimi is an outcast at her school because she is often seen hanging out under a bridge, smokes a lot and tends to have pyromanial tendencies.  She calls Naota by the nickname Takkun.  Takkun used to be what she called Naota’s brother; she also names a cat and a robot dog type monster this later in the story.  In episode two she believes the T.V. headed robot to be a god from a videogame that she plays called “The Lord of the Black Flame”, in which she burn things as a sacrifice.  The robot is named Canti after the videogame god, ironically he is the most human of the cast of characters in my opinion.  He is always seen helping people, be it by doing household chores like washing dishes or going to the 7-11 to buy a special pornographic magazine for Naota’s grandfather.  In one episode Haruko smashes the back of Canti’s head into pieces which he is extremely embarrassed about, he even wears a cardboard box on his head to cover it.  He is able to absorb Naota and fuse with him making him stronger so he can fight the different things that come out of Naota’s head.

So I think Fooly Cooly should be seen all fans of anime, at least once. This is a very random and bizarre show that seamlessly blends comedy and action to create one of the most of the wall things I have ever seen. Fooly Cooly is pretty much like a rollercoaster of madness that creates a chain that follows this formula Confusion>Acceptance>Addiction. I give it a 4 out of  4, go download it now, no go buy it now, the commentary is awesome and will help you understand the plot.

Spring 2008 New anime List

Monochrome Factor-

The story revolves around high school student Akira Nikaido, a typical slacker living a normal life. That is, until he meets the mysterious Shirogane, a man who suddenly appears and tells him to meet him at the school that night. Though he is skeptical, he goes anyway, and subsequently is attacked by a shadow monster. Shirogane convinces him that the balance between the human world and the shadow world has been distorted, and that Akira must become a “shin”, which is a creature of the shadow world, in order to help restore the balance.

Soul Eater-

The story takes place at the Shinigami Weaponry Vocational School, a school for creating Death Scythes for Gods of Death. The human and demon students seek the seeds of the souls of 99 humans and the soul of one witch, all of which are needed to turn just one of the demon students into a Death Scythe. One of the human students, Maka Alban, is paired with Soul Eater, a boyish demon whose true form is a scythe, as they collect the needed souls to transform Soul Eater.

Kamen no Maid Guy-

Fujiwara Naeka is a typical 17-year-old high school student. Or so we thought. She is really one of two surviving heirs of a tycoon who has the right to inherit his mass fortune when she turns 18 in half a year. Fubuki, a young and beautiful maid, and Kogarashi, a big burly maid guy with a mask, have been assigned to keep Naeka and her brother Kousuke safe from those who would plot their demise, and to steal the fortune she would inherit.

Vampire Knight-

Cross Academy is attended by two groups of students: the Day Class and the

Night Class. At twilight, when the students of the Day Class return to their dorm, they cross paths with the Night Class on their way to school. Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu are the Guardians of the school, there to protect the Day Class from the Academy’s dark secret: the Night Class is full of vampires.

Allison to Lillia-

This series takes place in a time roughly equivalent to the 1930s in our world. The world is divided into two cultures by a towering mountain range and huge river, and at the time of the story, the two cultures have been at war for hundreds of years. Allison, an air force pilot, and her childhood friend Willwho has a photographic memory, end up stealing an airplane and chasing some kidnappers across the river into the other country. Fortunately, they speak both languages.

Nabari no Ou-

Rokujou Miharu was a seemly reluctant junior high student living in his own world. However, within him, lurked the ultimate power of Nabari, “Omnipotent”. To possess such supreme weapon, the Wolf Pack of Iga swore to bring Miharu back to Iga village. On the other hand, Miharu’s English teacher, Kumohira sensei, and classmate, Kouichi, were the Banten ninjas whose mission was to protect Miharu. A war waged over the ownership of “Omnipotent” thus started. To survive, Miharu must enter the hidden world Nabari, to become the king.
